Urban gardens are popular green places in cities that have the ability to offer important ecosystem services, improve human well-being, and promote biodiversity. In 85 urban gardens (170 sites) across Zurich, we evaluated the impact of gardening activities on five soil functions as well as the link between plant (600 species) and soil fauna (earthworms: 18 species, springtails: 39 species) (Switzerland). Our findings show that high plant diversity in gardens boosted soil fauna and multifunctionality, while high garden management intensity reduced plant diversity.
